What Happens Next?
For a university project, I produced the animation What Happens Next?, which explored the potential environmental impact of the coronavirus pandemic. I wanted to raise awareness about how issues such as PPE waste, rising carbon emissions, and illegal logging could worsen as the world shifted its focus elsewhere.
The animation combined research with narrative storytelling, using visual metaphor to show how everyday pandemic practices could have unintended long-term consequences for the environment. For example, masks and gloves not being disposed of properly could lead to landscapes littered with plastic, while factories rushing to recover from lockdowns could push emissions back up to dangerous levels.
The project was as much about communication strategy as it was about design. The challenge was to take a complex, multi-faceted issue and translate it into a visual narrative that was engaging and accessible. By using animation, I could present these themes in a way that was both imaginative and memorable, encouraging viewers to think critically about environmental responsibility in the wake of the pandemic.
